starting Film 365…

The goal is a movie every day for a year. Mostly ones I haven’t seen before, or ones I saw so long ago that I can’t remember them adequately.

(& I probably won’t make it an entire year, with wanting to move and whatnot, but it’s a good goal!)

Day 1 - October 15 - Natural Born Killers - 8 - Love me some Juliette Lewis. Awesome movie.

Day 2 - October 16 - The Basketball Diaries - 9 - Leonardo DiCaprio is amazing. Good job for Mark Wahlberg. Should be shown in D.A.R.E.

Day 3 - October 17 - An American Crime - 9 - Unbelievable story based on real life events. Catherine Keener & Ellen Page are great.

Day 4 - October 18 - Antichrist - 8 - So fucked up. Willem Dafoe & Charlotte Gainsbourg (The Science of Sleep) are fantastic with these characters.

Day 5 - October 19 - Doubt - 8 - Philip Seymour Hoffman, Meryl Streep, & Amy Adams are all good. Viola Davis didn’t deserve an Oscar nomination for being in only 2 scenes, though. Same writer and director as the original play, which makes for a quiet, subtle film.

You know, a few months ago, I made a terrible mistake. I realized something, and instead of crushing the thought the moment it came I… I let it hang on, and now I know it to be true. And I’m afraid it’s stuck in my head forever. These are the best days of our lives. It’s a terrible thing to know, but I know it.
The Count (Philip Seymour Hoffman) in Pirate Radio

Day 6

Pirate Radio (The Boat That Rocked [UK/orig]) - 8 - Very much a hipster film. Definitely grows on you as you’re watching it. Rhys Darby being utilized while not on Flight of the Conchords. Bill Nighy. Philip Seymour Hoffman playing “The Count”. The ending is awesome.

Day 7

Smart People - 6 - One of those movies just depicting the everyday lives of its characters. Dennis Quaid, Ellen Page, Thomas Hayden Church, Sarah Jessica Parker. Not a lot happens & it’s not very emotional.

Day 8

Love Liza - 8 - Philip Seymour Hoffman is great, as per usual. In this role, an outsider that huffs gasoline. I’ve been wanting to see this film since I first heard about it, and though it’s different than I thought it’d be, is still charming and intimate. Worth your time.

Day 9

Savage Grace - 7 - Julianne Moore is good, but the story is very disturbing. Crazy to see real life stories told and still have them be shocking today (much like An American Crime).

Ever heard of chaos theory, Ed? It’s a science, tries to determine underlying patterns in chaotic systems like weather, ocean currents, blood flow sort of things. But it turns out that are few things more chaotic than the beat of a human heart. Its beating up, slowing down. Pretty face, flirty stares. It’s always changing on what’s happening to ourselves out there. It’s an erratic son of a bitch. But underneath all of that bump-da-bump mess, there is in fact a pattern, the truth, and it’s love. Most important thing about love is that we choose to give it, and we choose to receive it. Making it the least random act in the entire universe. It transcends blood, it transcends betrayal and all the dirt and makes us human.
Frank Allen (Ryan Reynolds) in Chaos Theory

Day 10

Chaos Theory (2008) - 7 - I love Ryan Reynolds and some of the moments in this film are really charming, but it seems a lil all over the place (hence, the name?). Worth a watch, though.

Day 11

Cry-Baby  - 5 - I love John Waters & Johnny Depp, but I definitely didn’t enjoy this as much as their other work. Campy, but not in the way that I like Waters’s other films (Hairspray, for example). I just didn’t like this one for some reason :/

Day 12

State and Main - 6 - Even though this film has an amazing cast (Philip Seymour Hoffman, William H. Macy, Alec Baldwin, Sarah Jessica Parker, & Julia Stiles) and is about the filming industry, it still didn’t really catch me. I wouldn’t really recommend it.

Day 13

Paranormal Activity - 6 - I would’ve given this movie a 5, because I really did not get into it at all (I bet it would’ve been better to see in theatres with screaming girls), but it gets a boost from its originality in terms of a simple “surveillance camera” style setup and extremely low budget. I’m even a fan of The Blair Witch Project, but I still thought this was really bad. I do NOT get why so many people seemed to say, “Oh, it was great. Except for the last 10 minutes.” I thought the whole thing was kinda meh.

Jackie Brown

  • Ordell: God damn girl, you gettin' high already? It's just two o'clock!
  • Melanie: It's that late?
  • Ordell: You know you smoke too much of that shit. That shit's gonna rob you of your ambition.
  • Melanie: Not if your ambition is to get high and watch TV.

Day 14

The Tracey Fragments - 6 - While I love Ellen Page and this film tries to do some interesting things with its editing (animations with split screens and whatnot), it’s very hipster-y and all over the place. Not really recommended.
